One of the most common quotes from inspection feedback is that ‘learners are not adequately engaged in learning’ but what does this mean and how do schools change this? This seminar will define what ‘lack of engagement’ can look like and provide models of good practice and practical strategies to empower school leaders and teachers to work towards positive learner engagement that has a real impact on learners’ progress.

Facilitator

Following over 25 years’ experience in teaching and school leadership, Steve Burnage is an established and trusted education consultant, inspector, and author with over 12 years’ experience in running a successful education consultancy. Worldwide, clients include ministries in China, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan; Universities in India, Pakistan and Nepal; Cambridge International, the International Baccalaureate and The British Council; and the publishers Marshal Cavendish and TES Global. Steve is lead inspector for The British Council in Egypt and is a regular keynote speaker at international Conferences. Steve’s training company – Mister Steve Training – has been rated ‘top education training provider in the UK’ for the last three years.

After spending over 25 years teaching and leading schools including time as the principal at an inner-city senior school in the UK, Steve Burnage went on to develop a successful education consultancy and training portfolio, supporting schools, academies, and colleagues across the UK and internationally in developing the quality of their leadership, their teaching, students’ learning, progress, and welfare; and their governance.

As an education consultant, trainer and author, Steve specialises in helping schools develop effective leadership and management at all levels, nurture outstanding learning and teaching, helping schools develop support strategies for vulnerable learner groups – inclusion and behaviour, pupil premium, boys, exceptionally able - school development, independent learning, outstanding assessment practice and data, performance management, positive behaviour intervention, policy and practice; and restorative justice, online and blended learning; and Music and Performing Arts education across all phases.

Steve is sought after as an expert practitioner, consultant, and trainer all over the world. He is an international accredited trainer and education consultant for Cambridge University Press and assessment, an accredited lead consultant for the Cambridge Education Partnership (the education reform branch of Cambridge University), lead trainer for Cambridge University’s on-line pedagogy and curriculum training and an accredited training consultant for The British Council, TES Global; and COBIS. I have recently led extended international training and leadership workshops for the Ministry of Education in Kazakhstan; the Chinese Government; the Indian Ministry of Education; and the government of Uzbekistan.

Steve is also a lead inspector of schools for the British Council and regularly leads school inspection teams in the Middle East and has responsibility for the training and induction of new inspectors. He is a tutor for students studying for a Master Degrees in Educational Leadership and is currently writing university accredited courses for both new and experienced school leaders.
