Course Description

This comprehensive 10-session professional development programme, structured into four modules, empowers mathematics educators to enhance teaching and student learning by focusing on mathematical literacy, problem-solving skills, and deep conceptual understanding. Participants will reflect on their own perceptions of mathematics to improve teaching approaches and student outcomes. The course covers international frameworks like the PISA Mathematics Literacy Framework and the Singapore Mathematics Curriculum Framework, effective strategies for teaching problem-solving such as Polya's Problem-Solving Approach, pedagogical ideas to foster students' mathematical reasoning, and the integration of technology through the Cerebry Platform to create meaningful and effective mathematics lessons.

Learning Outcomes

  • An Introduction to Mathematical Literacy by OECD PISA
    • to understand how their personal conceptions of mathematics impact their teaching approaches and students' learning outcomes.
    • Appreciate the importance of enhancing students' mathematical literacy through competencies outlined in the PISA 2022 Mathematics Framework.
  • Mathematical Process Skills and Problem Solving
    • Deepen participants' understanding of mathematical processes and the challenges students face in mastering them.
    • Equip participants with effective strategies and tools to teach problem-solving and process skills confidently.
  • Developing Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics
    • Empower teachers to foster deep conceptual understanding of mathematics among students in the classroom.
    • Promote the adoption of problem-solving approaches in the teaching and learning of mathematics to enhance student engagement and comprehension.
  • Application of Learning to Enhance Teaching and Learning
    • Enable teachers to design and implement lesson ideas that develop students' conceptual understanding effectively.
    • Familiarize teachers with the Cerebry Platform to integrate technology into teaching and enhance learning outcomes.
