Course Description

The School Librarian Development Course is a three-month program that equips librarians with the skills to manage dynamic libraries, support learning, and foster a love for reading. Through lectures, projects, and hands-on experience, participants gain knowledge in library management, information literacy, and digital tools. The course covers key topics, including collection development, ethical practices, and collaboration with teachers, while emphasizing the librarian's role in literacy advocacy. By the program’s end, participants are prepared to manage libraries that actively contribute to school-wide literacy and learning goals.

Course Delivery

The course combines online and in-person sessions, including a 1-hour introductory webinar. Each module has assignments requiring 1-2 hours to complete. Assessments include quizzes, project submissions, and a final capstone. All materials are available on an online platform, with recordings for review. Participants should plan for a 2-3 hour weekly commitment over three months.

Abdelhafid Barir is currently the SEA Library Manager. With a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (2014), he brings over fourteen years of expertise in managing library and information services and is a recognized leader in information management.

In his role at SEA, Abdelhafid oversees the planning and management of library activities, providing leadership and strategic technology expertise to drive the library’s growth and enhance service effectiveness.

Award

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a “School Librarian Development Course Completion certificate.” To earn the certificate, participants must attend at least 100% of sessions, complete all assignments, and submit a capstone project that demonstrates their ability to apply course concepts. This certificate recognizes their commitment to professional growth and equips them with skills to effectively manage school libraries.

Registration for the course opens on January, 2025. Participants are encouraged to register early to secure their spot before the deadline.

Course Dates

The course runs from February 10, 2025, to May 5, 2025, with sessions held on an alternating schedule (one week on, one week off). This structure allows participants to engage in-depth with course content and complete assignments during off-weeks.

Credit Hours

The course totals 12 credit hours, which participants can count towards meeting SPEA’s yearly required Professional Development (PD) hours.

  • Interest in Literacy and Student Engagement: No formal library science background is required, but a strong interest in literacy, student engagement, and resource management is encouraged.
