Course Description

Enabling Teachers to Enhance Students’ PISA Mathematical Literacy

PISA is an international assessment programme conducted every three years for 15-year students globally. This course is designed for school teachers to understand what it takes to enhance students’ PISA mathematical literacy. Participants will learn the rationale of PISA mathematics framework, the skill sets and problem-solving strategies required and the structure of context-based real-world problems. In particular, participants will be equipped with the necessary skills to help students such as the use of big ideas, the pedagogy of problem-based learning (PBL) and creating PISA-like questions. The course will also demonstrate examples of context-based questions used in Singapore.

Learning Outcomes

Module 1:

• PISA mathematics framework
• Computer-based Assessment of Mathematics (CBAM)
• Problem-based learning (PBL)

Module 2:

• Context and connectedness of concepts to big ideas
• Teaching and learning problem solving in Singapore
• Examples of context-based questions in Singapore

Module 3 :

• Teaching PISA-related questions
• Effective pedagogies
• 21-Century competencies

Module 4:

• Crafting PISA-like questions

He also provides consultation in educational works to schools, ministry of education and private organizations, in curriculum works, as well as the content and pedagogy in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science. Among his recent projects were the review and revision of the National Mathematics Curriculum for Azerbaijan and Qatar. He also visited classrooms around the world to help teachers improve their effectiveness in mathematics teaching

As an associate lecturer for Marshall Cavendish Institute and Marshall Cavendish Education, Brandon conducts mathematics and science workshops both locally and overseas to students, teachers, parents and editors. For primary and secondary mathematics workshops and seminars, Brandon Oh often shares pedagogical content knowledge and the learning theories essentially adopted in the teaching and learning of mathematics, in addition to the subject content knowledge. He promotes the importance of problem solving and the problem-based learning approach as an effective, student-centered pedagogy to achieve mastery of mathematical concepts, and develop desirable skills and attributes. For science, Brandon Oh advocates the 5E instructional model and the inquiry approach to promote an inquisitive mind, active learning and the development of process thinking skills among students. He promotes environmental friendliness and conservations through his involvement in agricultural and green projects, and its education with local schools.

Dr Lai Chee Chong

Dr. Lai completed his Ph.D. programme in mathematics in McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. As an associate lecturer in Marshall Cavendish Institute, he conducts professional development workshops and seminars for primary and secondary teachers in mathematics and science in Asean, UK, USA, France, Chile, Colombia and Kazakhstan. He has also participated in the review of mathematics curriculum for Qatar. Currently he works as a Curriculum Consultant to a multimedia education project in mathematics and science in Malaysia.

As a writer for Marshall Cavendish, he has written numerous mathematics textbooks for Singapore curriculum, Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and mathematics curricula of other countries at both the primary and the secondary levels.

Besides education, he had worked as Assistant IT Director in Singapore public sector and Chief Information Officer in the financial sector for several years. His IT expertise and experience have enabled him to bring IT applications into mathematics education so as to give mathematics a sense of reality in the real world context, an area very much needed in today’s mathematics education.

His interest in education lies in creativity, higher-order thinking skills, and applying visual skills in mathematics learning. This passion has fuelled him to develop a mathematics enrichment program known as Math Brains to cultivate thinking and reasoning skills and processes among young children through games, hands-on activities and visualisation. In recent years, he has designed and conducted STEM trails for students in collaboration with a team of educators and IT specialists.
